Woodcut, ink, gouache and pencil on board
Unframed: 122H x 81W, Framed: 125H x 84W
In mid-winter, this wattle crowns our home in golden blossom. I drew a swathe of it from life, using a hammer and nail to stamp tiny holes into the board to represent the unformed buds. I allow the grain of the board to compliment and sometimes inspire the composition. Here, the natural ripples in the wood suggested a flowing river cut through by a single branch - evoking a Japanese aesthetic where the balance between void and object creates tension and interest.
